Psalm 139

For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
Psalm 139:13

Reflect

Americans pride themselves on being the best at almost everything. We love to win at just about every competition. If you want proof, watch just about any international sporting event; when an American is competing, you’ll usually hear chants of U-S-A, U-S-A. But one contest we win every year isn’t such a good thing.

America is the undisputed champion of junk. We produce more disposable waste than any other country in the world. This also applies to junk mail. Every day, Americans receive enough junk mail that, if burned, would produce enough energy to heat more than 500,000 homes. Every American gets more than 41 pounds of junk mail each year. This places more than 5.5 million tons of junk mail into our landfills. Every one of us spends about eight months of our lives just opening and disposing of junk mail. (And don’t get me started on junk e-mail…)

While we excel at making and disposing of junk, God doesn’t. Regardless of how we may feel about ourselves (or other people), God doesn’t make any junk. Every one of us was specially created by our Lord. Psalm 139 tells us that before we were born He had a plan crafted for our lives. This applies to every person ever made – from kings and queens and captains of industry to homeless people on the street. We all see people every day and wonder, “How in the world did they end up here.” The next time you see someone like that, remember that God doesn’t make junk. He created them with a wonderful plan for their life, and He still has a plan for them – and for you.

Today, remember that God created you with a purpose, and pray that He will help you walk within that purpose throughout the day. Also pray for the people you see who might have strayed from His plan. Ask for the Lord’s blessings on their life and that they might have a fresh encounter with Him.
